The 50’s may be popular for Elvis and the 60’s may take pride in The Beatles. But it’s arguably the 80’s that’s become the perfect era that birthed icons which different generations mesh really well with. Mario Bros., for example, became a hit when many of the Generation X were still kids. It became such a classic that even up to now, the Millennials and Gen Z still enjoy the modernized versions of the game. This is the reason why Ivy Jimenez, owner of Derive, chose that specific era to represent their new cafe – to cater to as many age groups as possible.
Once you step inside, you’ll instantly feel like you’re in a retro arcade. The neon signs, choice of playlist, and the various arcade machines help give off that instant vibe. You don’t have to worry about waiting for your turn to play the games as they have enough machines for everyone. You can choose from Pacman, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and even Foosball! Can you already feel your hands itching to beat your friends’ high scores? One round will only cost you Php5 so get ready to relive the arcade life during your entire stay!
Among the gaming machines that they have, the one they’re most proud of is the claw machine right beside the counter. “The stuffed toys inside were all purchased from Gawad Kalinga,” explains Ivy. If you look closely, each toy has a tag on it embroidered with “Proudly Pinoy,” which just means that with every round you play at the claw machine, you get the opportunity to help the less fortunate.
Apart from the arcade games, they also have a separate Function Room where you can celebrate parties and events. Watch your guests’ jaws drop as they marvel over the Darna, Michael Jackson, and Back to the Future murals on the wall. Their eats also stay true to the theme. For instance, their Triple Cheese Burgertime is as colorful as the decorations with its fuschia pink buns and curly fries on the side. Don’t forget to pair it with a tall glass of chocolate milkshake for that classic diner combo!
Another dish that you can eat to refill your HP is the Herb-Crusted Salmon that packs on a savory crunch. Eat it with the creamy mashed potatoes and asparagus on the side. For the health nuts, you can also for a serving of their Seared Salmon Salad to balance the meal.
Before taking a bite of their IG-worthy dessert, make sure to take a selfie with it first. On top of the thick and chewy cookie is a cartoonish drawing made out of fondant. A few of the designs they have on hand are Pacman, the Pacman ghosts, and a Rubik’s Cube.
The 80’s may be long gone but there are some people who still cling on for nostalgia’s sake. This new cafe in the South succeeds in bringing back the glory days. So for those times when you’re feeling extra nostalgic, do remember that your favorite decade is now just a stone’s throw away, no time machines needed.
