Support Benguet farmers at the Old Manila Eco Market this weekend


As the cold season comes to a close, the influx of vegetables and fruits from Northern Luzon to Metro Manila gets heavier. There are even reports of some farmers in Benguet who are forced to throw away their produce due to over-supply.

Thanks to kind-hearted groups and individuals, our local farmers are finding novel ways to bring their produce to Manila to make sure they get their harvest’s worth.

This weekend (February 28 to March 1), the Old Manila Eco Market will be home to dozens of farmers and four tons of produce from Benguet. Starting at 7:00 a.m., the market will be open to the public where they can purchase locally grown vegetables and fruits at an affordable price.

According to Sandy Allan-Beltran’s Facebook post, the market was “possible thanks to 1) a big-hearted vegetable buyer who decided to try and sell at the lowest cost the vegetables bought from farmers of La Trinidad in the Mt. Province, and 2) the awesome Sheila Leyva & Shine de Castro of Old Manila Eco Market, who generously gave of their space at their event.”

She adds, “This is good for our farmers, for our economy, [and] for us here in the city who need fresh produce at non-inflated prices.”

They have cabbage and sayote for as low as P25/kilo; carrots for P35/kilo; radish, celery, and marble potatoes for P40/kilo; beets for P45/kilo; calamansi, tomatoes, Chinese pechay for P50/kilo; white onion and Korean radish for P60/kilo; broccoli, cauliflower, and yacon for only P70/kilo; potatoes, leeks, iceberg and romaine lettuce for P75/kilo; parsley, red onion, and spinach for P80/kilo, ginger and bell pepper for P120/kilo; lemon and garlic for P140/kilo; basil for P250/kilo, and fresh strawberries for only P360/kilo or P90 per quarter-kilo.
